Grafity’s Wall Campaign is Live on Unbound!

Grafity’s Wall is a coming-of-age Graphic Novel about expression, rebellion, ambition and acceptance painted against the backdrop of Mumbai’s ever changing and evolving street-culture; from street-art and street-food to Hinglish hip-hop, designer drugs, violence, love and loss. Through the lens of four young lives, you’ll see this city like you’ve never seen it before.
When an aspiring street artist who calls himself ‘Grafity’ watches the tenements outside his home being razed, he finds an unlikely canvas at the lone wall still left standing in the debris. Over the next weeks, he begins creating a mural on the wall, one that chronicles the lives of his friends. A local low-level fixer named Jay who harbors dreams of being a rapper. An incurable romantic named Chasma who must endure in a place and among people intent on rejecting him. And Saira, an aspiring actress with ambitions so fierce that they threaten to consume her and all those around her. As the mural takes shape, the story gives us glimpses into these incandescent lives, their hopes and dreams both inspired and impeded by their circumstances, and the impossible city that they live in.
Grafity’s Wall is the first among a new line-up of Graphic Novels being crowdfunded and published by award-winning publisher, Unbound.

SIMON SAYS KICKSTARTER GOES LIVE

“For evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing.” –Simon Wiesenthal

In 1946, Nazis are on the run. Not only from Allied forces and the newly founded United Nations, who deemed their atrocities a crime against humanity, but those who hold a more personal grudge. Enter Simon, a Jewish artist who survives the war when his artistic skills land him a forced job painting Swastikas on train cars. When the war ends, he discovers his family is dead, and so he charges himself with the mission of bringing about justice. Now he paints swastikas on his targets, and hunts them down by any means necessary.
Simon Says: Nazi Hunter #1 is a Kickstarter comic project from author/artist team Andre Frattino and Jess Lee. It’s a noir-fiction story inspired by the real life Nazi Hunter, Simon Wiesenthal, who survived the war and spent the rest of his life hunting down elite members of the Third Reich, such as Adolf Eichmann, Franz Stangl and the “Angel of Death”, Joseph Megele. Intrigued? Visit the Kickstarter at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1276155749/simon-says-nazi-hunter
“The story of Simon Wiesenthal, a man who at one time was an internationally known Nazi Hunter, is becoming less and less known to the world at large.” Andre states. “However, this is a man who survived great horrors and still went on to devote the rest of his life to bringing these villains to justice. He’s one of the clearest examples of a super hero detective in the real world. In many ways, he’s Batman.”
Simon Says: Nazi Hunters #1 also takes a lot of its inspiration from the old noir and pulp-fiction stories of the early 20th century. It’s styling is influenced heavily by Ian Fleming’s Bond series. Anyone who is fan of such hit shows as Sherlock and The Man in the High Castle will find this a comic series right up their alley.
The Kickstarter is set to launch on January 27th which is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. For many historians familiar with the Holocaust, is an important anniversary. In 1945, on that day Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Red Army. The Holocaust lead to the death of 11 million people, 6 million of which were Jewish. Sadly today, this is still a highly relevant topic, and something that we must all keep in mind when we look at the world, and swear to ourselves that we won’t let it happen again.
The team is looking to raise $5,000 on Kickstarter before February 28th. 75% of this will go towards production costs, with the remaining 25% going to printing costs and delivery. The team is looking to complete the project by year’s end, and if enough interest is generated, will continue onto Issue #2, with the eventual goal of creating a full-fledged graphic novel.
About the Creators:

Andre Frattino is an established graphic novelist, having penned and drawn such titles at The Reaper of St. George Street and Lost Souls of Savannah. Jesse Lee is a newcomer on the scene, but his detailed and professional illustrations transport the readers through time to the post-World War II world of war torn Europe that our hero traverses across to land his prey.

Free Syrian Comic For Kids

The year-long Syrian conflict has displaced millions. From the horrors of Aleppo to the sheer struggle of the journey to safety, Syrians everywhere are fighting to survive, and the sheer numbers of children affected by this are catastrophic. A new hardship begins when a child makes it to their new home. Strange environments, foreign people, and often a new language make fitting in incredibly traumatic. This was the origin of the Syrian comic, HaawiyatThe comic will be 8 pages with a full color cover and published in Arabic. Filled with well known Syrian folktales this comic  will bring children something that brings comfort, a taste of home, and will be something they can hold in their hands and say most unequivocally is their own.
haawiyat

“If I was a doctor, I would pick up my medic bag. If I was a soldier, I would pick up a weapon. I am a professor, a comic writer, and a father.  I am helping where I can, how I can. Children are scared, disoriented, and feeling lost. We have to give them hope,” explained the project’s leader A. David Lewis. This is phase one of a grand plan. We want to reach more kids in more places with phase two.”

An incredible team of creators and translators have volunteered to donate their time to create the title. Ka-blam Digital Printing will be creating the book gratis, Comicraft is donating a font, and Nadia Alawa’s renowned NuDay Syria will graciously distribute the book overseas as well as report on its effect. There are tentative plans to expand on this idea and their participation will be crucial.

The stories to be included are The King’s Daughter’s Earring, The Miller and The Two Djinn, and The Story Of The Five Cakes. Each tale was specifically chosen for their trigger free nature and relevance to current issues children are most likely dealing with.

Creators include Rob Croonenborghs, Jim Shaw, Joseba Morales, Mexi Gremillion, and Ursula Murray Husted. Taylor Hastings will be lettering and Farrah Hamza is translating. Initial drop sites for the comic include Northern Syria and Turkey. Shipping will begin in February. Are you a creator interested in participating in phase two? Email captionbox@gmail.com.

DAVID SANDBERG (DIRECTOR OF ‘KUNG FURY’) JOINS THE TEAM OF FRENCH SCI-FI SHORT ‘BLOOD MACHINES’

Paris, France – David Sandberg, the Swedish director of the acclaimed short film Kung Fury, has come aboard as an executive producer on Blood Machines by Seth Ickerman, a French director duo composed of Raphaël Hernandez and Savitri Joly-Gonfard.

Following two space hunters chasing the female ghost of a machine through the galaxy, Blood Machines is a 30-minutes Sci-Fi short and the sequel of music video Turbo Killer by synthwave artist Carpenter Brut.

Currently campaigning on Kickstarter since Dec. 1st, Seth Ickerman already reached his goal after only two weeks. Now passed 100,000 Euros, the French team would like to reach bigger objectives and expand Blood Machines into a Virtual Reality experience (in addition to the short version) or a feature film à la Interstella 5555 by Daft Punk.

Seduced by the world of Blood Machines, David Sandberg reached out to Seth Ickerman in the early days of the campaign. As they share the same do it yourself approach and passion for the 80’s movies, a collaboration soon appears to be a logical move.

“Seth Ickerman are hands down some of the most talented and exciting visual artists I’ve come across. Each of their frames are gorgeous, show a painstaking attention to detail, and most of all, an undeniable love for movies. I can’t wait to see these guys get their shot to tell this story ”, said David Sandberg.

As synthwave music and retro films are labelled as fringe movements, which limit the traditional sources of financing, David Sandberg and Seth Ickerman decided to pull together and “cross the streams” to make such an ambitious project happen. Blood Machines remains quite bold for a short film while it needs to remain independent and true to the director‘s vision.

“Bringing David on board is a natural association for us after ten years in our garage. He went through the same process and what he did on Kickstarter with Kung Fury and later on with the distribution is a true reference for us in terms of maintaining the creative control of his film, while reaching out to a world audience and bridging the garage and professional mindsets. We are really happy that he’s joining our team in this exciting adventure!”, said Seth Ickerman.

After raising $630,000 on Kickstarter with Kung Fury, which premiered in Cannes and was released on Netflix, Sandberg will be bringing his experience to a production team composed of Frederic Fiore and Alexis Perrin. Focused on elevated genre movies, their venture Logical Pictures is currently co-producing An Incident in A Ghost Land by Pascal Laugier (Martyrs, The Tall Man), and has several films lined up – including Ickerman, the first feature film of Seth Ickerman.
